The supernatural is THERE. And it's LISTENING.
After doing a three-card Tarot spread online (a friend sent me the link) for my "real" question (which was about whether I'll sell a particular book), I whimsically said, "I need a reading for a scene in the Camille book. I made up a passable, but I need the real one."
It obliged. In fact, it gave a PERFECT reading for that story. It echoes the story events that I wanted to hint at.
The Universe is trying to scare me. It worked. (Not really scare me, but make me even MORE confident that Somebody Up There Likes Us.)
I'm using the reading in the scene. Wow!
Mine: (Mystifying, as usual)
THE HERMIT
THE TOWER
THE MOON
The Hermit--(Situation/Recent Past): Come back to the real world and get your feet dirty.
The Tower--(Present Situation): Crisis sucks, and you're either in the middle of it, or just on the lip. In terms of what you're dealing with, go ahead and crash and burn. Maybe a Phoenix will arise. Maybe not.
The Moon--(Resolution/How it works out): The Moon deals with mysteries and the hidden. 'Something's coming, don't know when, but it's soon, catch the moon, one-handed catch.' You may not like what you catch, but tough. Mystery is heading in your direction, and you won't be able to avoid it. Take a deep breath, and prepare to plunge into the unknown.
I don't think this is a very promising three-card reading. Just at a glance, I think it might be telling me this particular book won't necessarily appeal to the people I have sent it to. It's a hunch. Then again, it may be telling me that I need to work even harder. Or that something's going to fly out of left field. Whee!
Then I asked for Camille's reading.
THE HANGED MAN
STRENGTH
THE MAGICIAN
!!! !!! !!! !!!!!!
THE SPIRIT WORLD OR UNIVERSE HAS A SENSE OF HUMOR.
In the book, this character has been coasting for a while, and she does need to wake up and draw on the strength within, and a magician is pursuing her to get back his stolen magic. The reading parallels the book. The surprising part is, the Universe has actually read my book. (grin)
THE HANGED MAN--You've been coasting, hanging out, or sitting things out. Recess is almost over. Wake up and sniff the turtles. Someone is sawing away at the branch that has been holding you suspended.
STRENGTH--The lion inside you has been freed from its cage. You must try to whip it into shape, or love it into partnership with you. If you fight, though, the lion wins. You're not going to be able to figure this one out using intellect. It's got to come from your broken but powerful heart.
THE MAGICIAN--What is magic? That question becomes your mantra. Someone is coming in your direction who is going to plunge you into the heart of it. Is magic something wicked, or something mysterious and alluring? Get ready to have your little mind blown away.
Poor Camille. But it's so neat that the reading paralleled what's happening to the character. This actually gave me some insight as to what's going on in the book, which means the theory about tarot information coming from the subconscious gets ten points; however, doing it online didn't give me any way to manipulate the cards or the reading. So that takes away the ten points.
Weird.
(Yes, I know that the Tarot doesn't exactly fall into line with being a mainstream Christian. There's a mailing list called "Christian Tarot" that talks about this situation. I think the archetypes called upon by the cards are really interesting. I'm a fence-sitter as far as whether this is Eeeeevil or not. Hubby is NOT a fence-sitter. Neither is my mom. Good thing they don't read my boring ol' LiveJournal!)

Date: 2006-01-23 06:55 am (UTC)But you can be sure that the Universal Consciousness, as I call it, knows, among other things, which of your books stands the best chance of getting published soonest. I believe, but I don't expect anyone else to agree with me, that the U.C. can be communicated with. I've had experiences of my own that have convinced me of this. (If you at all care to learn more, I'll send you a .pdf file of AUTOPSY OF A LIVING CORPSE, which spells out my personal beliefs at some length.) I mention this not to promote the book (which I would hardly be doing by sending you a free copy), but to show you that there are technqiues that can establish a quality of connection at least as good as Tarot cards.
And on that subject...the Tarot accurately predicted my first wife's death, and that was an online-but-computerized version on a Radio Shack CoCo II, back in 1985. It gave me a healthy respect for what the cards, virtual or material, could do.
Why do Christians waste so much of their time worrying about whether something is evil? Jesus had a good handle on all that, and as I recall (not from having been there), He stuck with the large concepts and the fixable wrongs of the people he knew. I can't speak for you (and I CERTAINLY can't speak for Jesus!), but He does have a reputation for being a tolerant guy, and if flipping over a few pieces of pasteboard gives you a ueful idea for your book, do really think He would condemn you for putting that knowledge to use?
One quick story from my own experience (my version of a St. Olaf story). Back in 1984 I wrote a march called "Texas Triumphant" that incorporated a bit of "The Yellow Rose of Texas" in its break strain. It was one of my better efforts; it even got played by a high school band in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. But I always felt that it could have been better, somehow. And then one night, having a cigarette outside during a visit to my second wife's daughter at Mammoth Lakes, California, I sensed "Texas Triumphant" playing inside my head. (I know, you probably think that was just a symptom of Judith slowly driving me crazy.) At one point in the march's second strain, it sounded completely different from my written version. I rewound my brain, played it again, and quickly realized this new chunk of melody was infinitely superior to what I had used back in '84. I went inside, borrowed a scrap of paper, and scribbled down the new melody and its harmonic structure. Once back home, I redid the march, incorporating that new section.
What do I think happened? I'm not enough of a mystic to know. But in my simplistic way, I think John Philip Sousa, who is part of the Universal Consciousness like the rest of us, happened to wander by, was perhaps a little surprised to see a guy playing a march in his head in as late a year as 1987, and stopped to quietly suggest, "why don't you try this? It relates much better to the march's form than what you've put in there."
It wasn't eerie, it didn't seem at all "supernatural" (though of course it was), and it produced a better piece of music, something of which the world is in perpetual short supply.
Evil? Well, I'd question the motives of anyone who felt that way about it.
My point -- I really do have one -- is, take help from wherever it comes. Oh, if it's from a smiling guy in long red underwear who carries a pitchfork and uses it to poke people in the ass, caution would be called for. Otherwise, though, good advice is good advice, and if in your heart you know that to be true, use it.

Date: 2006-01-25 08:23 pm (UTC)You're right. I just . . . kind of was amazed that I got such an accurate reading there. Almost spooky.
Y'know, I think I used to have a file of all your books. But why don't you send the .pdf of AUTOPSY along? I'm sure you've edited it somewhat. Did you find the software to extract the text from a .PDF file? Someone told me there are utilities that are freeware to do that. Then you could work on your books again in Word.
