Human beings are by nature selfish. We consistently choose self-preservation and short-term ego gratification over principle - over what we know is right. There's pure malevolence too, and it's not to be underestimated. But the bad elements wouldn't get far without plenty of the former being all too eager to follow along. A principled life really is the undiscovered country. The wavering course set, lost, and set again for that elusive place is humanity's ongoing drama, individually and collectively.

I wish I could live up to this all the time: "The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he is always doing both."
