The (sugar-"free") pumpkin pie is baked. The turkey's thawed and set to go for two hours (this year, we got a "two-hour" precooked bird, so we'll see how that goes.) All kinds of side dishes were labored over last night (green bean casserole, broccoli-rice casserole, sweet potatoes with "mushmellows," corn souffle/pudding, cornbread dressing) and await reheating. A can of cranberry sauce had its top popped and its cylindrical holiness eased out (nobody'll eat the fancy whole-berry relishes I used to make.)

The feast awaits.

And the dog is better. Still coughing--diagnosis was kennel cough, and the vet (a new one--ours is semi-retired and has run in this rude one on us) said it was OUR FAULT for not getting him revaccinated every six months, as that's now the duration of the vaccine, and that furthermore his teeth look dirty to her--but not nearly as hard or as often.

Mama's taken that tube of oxygen out of her nostrils at last, and now says her legs hurt instead. But that's an improvement.

Temperatures dropped into the thirties early yesterday evening. Hubby covered up the plants in the front courtyard. On the way to pick up milk and a Lotto ticket, we saw several houses already covered in Christmas lights! Industrious little beavers.

And I just typed some stuff on the NaNovel.

Now, back to take a nap until the parade comes on and others begin to stir. (I got up to give puppy his antibiotic--it's every twelve hours at five-thirty.) On the whole, things are all right. We're much better off than many people and than we COULD be, and we do realize we're blessed. We just need patience *now*.

Happy Thanksgiving, Y'all.

Happy Thanksgiving, hope it's a good day for you. The vaccine only prevents about 2/3 cases of kennel cough, and because it is more bothersome than fatal, it's really not necessary unless you board your dog or frequent dog parks. It should run its course in about two weeks.

Turkey Day

Felicitations of the day for ALL y'all.

Teddy, happy to hear the kennel cough is on the mend.

Jodie, if your legs hurt, at least it proves you _have_ legs. Think of all the people who don't, especially during this stupid war.

Don, try your wife's fancy whole-berry relish. It's better for you.

Shalanna, all you have to do is be a _little_ more stubborn and persistent, and one of your books -- I haven't a clue which one -- is going to fool you and get published. Just don't give up!

Did you catch the Israel Philharmonic Anniversary Concert on PBS last night? I'm thankful that I got to see the whole thing: Zubin Mehta conducting, Pinchas Zuchermann playing the Bruch violin concerto, the orchestra doing a lovely "La Valse," and Daniel Barenboim finishing up with the Brahms First Piano Concerto. Lofty. A cathedral of sound. Barenboim, even in full dress, looks more like a construction worker (or an old Billy Joel) than a pianist, but once fingers make contact with keys . . . oh, my!

I'm VERY grateful for that concert! I haven't heard the Brahms First Piano Concerto in many years; forgot its depth of emotion, its magnificent musical architecture. He wrote it following the death of his dear friend and musical sponsor, Robert Schumann. (And then, being a musician, he fell in love with Schumann's widow and launched one of history's noblest unrequited love affairs.) Years later, Brahms would return to the form and write a second concerto for piano, one destined to go down in history at THE piano concerto. I'm thankful for Brahms, in general.

Be thankful for _your_ talent, Shalanna. When things look hopeless, remember what the Big Fella said about hiding your gifts under a bushel (or was it a peck? Surely not Gregory).

I will never finish my NaNo, not this one. Just as well, as it sucks. With the other things going on in my life, I'm not going to lose any sleep over that. I do hope you have success with it, and all other contest entries.

_as_ THE piano concerto, not _at_. The mind is the first thing to go.

Happy Thanksgiving to you.

As for that new veterinarian, show her your dust as you leave to find one with a better bedside manner. Life's too short to be treated like that by anyone, and that one is a person who needs to understand the old southern expression "You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar."

Dennis: that was a magnificent concert, wasn't it? I didn't get to watch the whole thing -- doing Thanksgiving-prep stuff -- but Keys had it on, and I heard a lot of it. I did sit down, finally, and get to concentrate on the performance. The "La Valse" was amazing!
