Encourage and reassure a friend today
Oct. 19th, 2005 02:12 pmIf any of you know
marykaykare, Mary Kay Kare IRL, either in person or through fandom, I'd like you to go over to her LiveJournal and post a message of encouragement. If you've ever benefited from something she has done or said in SF/F fandom, or at a convention, or from something she has written, she needs to hear it now. She was treated badly at the last convention (in my opinion) and was already on the brink of a major visit from the Black Dog (depression), and now she really needs to hear from you. I don't want you to go over and be insincere or give her some fluff B.S. or something, but if you do know her or have been reading her journal, I think it might help if you left a comment or called her on the phone (if you know her personally). Her journal entries have spoken of her alarming increase in sadness over the past few weeks, if not months, but I don't know her at all outside of LJ, and so I didn't feel it was my place to do anything. Now I think it is my place . . . now I think that any encouragement might help. I've been in that pit, and there's nowhere to go but down.
So if you know her, go on over there and speak up.
I really relate to her feeling of needing to tug on people's sleeves to be noticed, and the feeling of being snubbed and ignored in group situations, and the pain of rejection when people prefer not to have you join their lunch/dinner groups (or when they dump you because someone else who can really help their careers is suddenly available.) Sometimes I just can't stand people, y'know.
