How to Celebrate Saint Crispin's Day

Crispin was a noble Roman who, along with his brother Crispinius, became a missionary to Gaul. They took up the cobbler's trade either so the faithful wouldn't have to support them or, depending on the version you read, so they could give shoes to the poor. Crispin and Crispinius were martyred around 256 anno domini. It's traditional to donate shoes, gloves, and scarves to charity today.

On Saint Crispin's Day, we should honor lives well lived, beliefs well put into practice and not just spouted off as ideals, and shoes well made. I honored the holiday also by "cobbling" together this entry. *net-wide groan*

Tonight, let's throw a party for all who come under Crispin's patronage: not only cobblers and shoemakers, but also weavers, tanners, glovers, tatters (lace-makers), and saddle makers. You can act out "Henry V" or rent a video.

King Henry invokes Crispin and Crispinius on the eve of the Battle of Agincourt.

I hope you remembered to buy yourself a new pair of shoes!

Yummy! (grin)

Marketing people will eventually get hold of this and come out with Crispins.

I've been tatting since 1978 and making bobbin lace since 1983. I think this is the first time I've had an actual patron saint for lacemakers mentions. Hurray for Saint Crispin.

Since I've become a professional writter I haven't had much time to make lace or hang out with my lacemaking friends. But I did go on a tatting binge a few weeks ago. Check out my website

Check out my website <ireneradford.com> for a contest to win a tatted bookmark. When that contest is over, I'll run a treasure hunt through the website for more bookmarks. Have to find homes for some of them. I've already filled the Christmas list.
